This vibrant scene is a composite of several diverse literary references. A princess overcome with emotion is entertained by female musicians, whilst a prince on horseback resembling the young Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula approaches. Two nobles engaged in conversation are seen in the background against a dramatically illuminated sky. Avadh, a former Mughal province, was ruled by a Shia dynasty of nawabs who were renowned for their patronage of poetry, painting and performance arts. Nawabi culture was a lucrative draw for many European officers who chose to settle there. Collected by Robert Blair Munro Binning.
