Flies on film
Eric Lucey (1923-2010) worked as a scientist and photographer before establishing a Research Film Unit at the Institute of Animal Genetics in the 1950s. Lucey's unique approach combined state-of-the-art equipment with devices of his own making. His manipulation of speed, motion and scale using time-lapse and microphotography was invaluable for observing and measuring minute scientific processes. This film shows the developing egg of the fruit fly Drosophila, a species which has played a central role in genetics research.
