Birds of a feather
Alan Greenwood (1897-1981) joined the Institute of Animal Genetics in 1923 and established an international reputation in poultry studies. He became director of Edinburgh's Poultry Research Centre in 1947. This paper with Greenwood's long-term collaborator Janet Blyth examines how certain hormones affect plumage; it appeared just a year before the hormones controlling the development of male characteristics were identified. One of the new National Avian Research Facility buildings on the University's Easter Bush campus is named in Greenwood's honour.
