Anatomia del cavallo, infermita, et suoi rimedii (1618)

TitleAnatomia del cavallo, infermita, et suoi rimedii
Date1618
CreatorCarlo Ruini
SubjectHorses; Dissection
TypeWoodcut
DescriptionThis fifth edition of The Anatomy of the Horse, Diseases and Treatments was first published in 1598 to great success, and remained the seminal study of horse anatomy throughout the seventeenth century. It is lavishly illustrated throughout with woodcuts. Three illustrations in particular, one of which is displayed here, show a flayed horse from varying viewpoints and bears a clear resemblance to the earlier sculpture attributed to the circle of Giambologna. The connection between the two works suggests Ruini used the bronze to inform his own illustrations.
