An illustration of a winking sloth hanging from a branch. “Thank you” is written across the leaves and confetti surrounds the image.

This exhibition marks the launch of the RZSS Archive at the University of Edinburgh’s Heritage Collections. The completion of this project would not have been possible without generous funding from RZSS and the hard work of archivist Fiona Menzies, conservator Amanda Dodd, and photographer George Hodgson.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in creating this exhibition, including Fiona Menzies for design and curation; Bianca Packham for executing the design on our online platform; beautiful illustrations by Angel Siu Yan Chan; Juan Martos Dias and Calum Macphail from Edinburgh University Media Team for filming and editing the videos; Christine Megowan, Daryl Green, and Pamela McIntyre for their input in this exhibition; Dee Winfield, Jo Elliot, and Harriet Good from RZSS for their more recent knowledge of its history; Therese Stewart, Elaine Cotton, David Field, Darren McGarry and Karen Stiven for agreeing to take part in the “memories” video; and finally to Aline Brodin for her studious participation in the videos.

Finally, thanks are due to the wider Heritage Collections and RZSS teams who have helped on this project, whether arranging appointments for visitors, helping rehouse the photographic material, or for accommodating the archive team while we visited Edinburgh Zoo.

A note on the illustrations

The colourful, original illustrations used in this exhibition were created by Angel Siu Yan Chan, an Edinburgh-based artist and illustrator. Angel used the stories and images from the RZSS archive to create colourful imagined scenes from the past and present. All images are subject to copyright © Angel Siu Yan Chan.
